When Robert Gagno was in high school, he liked to do backflips to impress the cheerleaders. Now, as a tall and fairly lanky 27-year-old, he sits at the Lamplighter in Gastown and talks about how he still enjoys surprising people who underestimate him. Gagno has autism, diagnosed by the time he was three years old.
The year 1996 was a good one for basketball. Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to victory in the NBA Finals after an historic season; elsewhere, a young Shareef Abdur-Rahim was drafted to theVancouver Grizzlies, beginning his impressive career with the franchise. As their leading scorer and rebounder, he quickly became the star of the team. “I tried to be as well-rounded as I could,” he says.
