I love all days that start with rain.
Falling out of a dream into the soft cradling sound of rain outside. Rain braiding down the window. The long thunderous growl of a downpour sweeping sheets of rain across the water. I love hiking in the rain, running in the rain, movie scenes made better by rain (ahem, The Notebook) and songs about rain – there are plenty.
Purple Rain, Setting Fire to the Rain, Singin’ in the rain, yup, I love all days that start with rain - especially if It’s Raining Men. Just kidding, that's dangerous.
5 signs you’re a pluviophile too
1. The sound of rain soothes you
The pitter-patter of rain on a window - is there any other natural non-threatening white noise as calming to lull you off to sleep?
2. You love a moody sky
The whole world feels quieter and calmer on a rainy day (okay, unlessyou're driving downtown). If you are slightly more inclined towards vampire-like tendencies (the Anne Rice kind, not the Stephanie Meyer kind) then you would take an overcast sky over a scorching hot beach day, year round.
3. You feel extra productive
You are fine to stay in and work on those passion projects you’ve been putting off. And doesn't it feel like the perfect day to get your laundry done, or read a book, or just take a day to yourself, guilt-free? 4. You love the smell of rain
It's called 'petrichor,' and it's a word that describes the smell that lingers after rain. It's apparently derived from the Greek words "petra" meaning stones of the Earth, and "ichor." In Greek mythology, ichor was a mineral in the blood which made people immortal.
Technically, it's not the smell of rain you love but the soil's reaction tothe rain. Some plants secrete oils during dry periods, and when it rains, those oils are released. They mix with chemicals secreted by certain soil-dwelling bacteria (actinobacteria, which play an important role in decomposition ) and together are thrust into the air. Just to be clear, what you smell after rain is actually plant oil and bacteria.
Not as romantic, but I still love it.
5. You feel equally cozy as you do invincible
Being in the rain makes me feel alive. It also makes me feel completely at peace with whatever it is I'm doing, even if it's seemingly unproductive. Wrapped up in a blanket with a good book or a movie is where I am content to live my life when it's raining.
Oh, and if you want to test out your new rain jacket but it isn’t raining, just get a friend to throw a bucket of water at you.
I have started a new partnership with Live Out There, whose mission it is to inspire all Canadians to find their own adventure, rain or shine. They also stock all your favourite outdoor brands to make that possible.
